Clueless

These mourning Eurasian collared doves were not far from one of the eagles that I showed you last week. They were a mere wingbeat or two from talons that could make quick work of at least one of them. I didn’t stick around to see if I was correct that they were in peril.

  1. Hello,

Pretty shot of the Doves, I hope they stay safe from the predators. They are actually Eurasian Collared Doves, they look similar to the Mourning Dove. Take care, enjoy your day! Wishing you a great new week!

  2. Kay,
those are Eurasian Collared doves, not Mourning doves. You can tell by the black “collar” on the back of their necks. Collared doves also have a rounded “fatter” tail than a Mourning dove. A Mourning Dove’s tail tapers to a sharp point. Mourning doves are more pinkish hued, compared to the lighter colored more whitish Collared Dove. Collared doves are considered to be an invasive species, like the European Starling and the House Sparrow. They were introduced to the Bahamas in the 70’s, some made it to Florida in the 80’s, and since then they have spread explosively across most of the US, and north to southern Alaska. It is thought that they are more aggressive and may disrupt and displace the native Mourning Doves.
