The red-winged blackbirds are showing off in the marsh these days. They have a loud, sort of chortling song and this guy was calling to a female on a nearby cattail. The males of the species sport bright red and yellow epaulets. The brown females are dull by comparison, though the chirping males don’t seem to think so.
I’ve never seen a bird with epaulets before. It’s a beauty.
I live close to their nesting grounds and the air is full of their songs… karee
They’re beautiful birds, and very territorial during nesting season.
What an attractive looking bird. Love that bit of colour he has on his wing.

That’s quite often the case with birds, that the males are more colourful, hardly seems fair 😉
