Inside the lighthouse

For me the most exciting part of being a volunteer lighthouse keeper at the New Dungeness Light Station in 2011 was — no surprises here — going inside to explore the lighthouse. As you can see, the building is well maintained by the volunteers of the New Dungeness Light Station Association who took over operation and maintenance of the station after the U.S. Coast Guard recalled its last keeper in 1994.

It’s a long climb to the top of the lighthouse but it’s worth the exercise. This is the rotating beacon. Click here for photos and information about lighthouse history.

This view from the top looks west, back down the spit that connects to the Dungeness area bluffs off in the misty distance.

The lighthouse stairs are eye candy.

  1. That was an excellent link Kay. The lighthouse is lucky to have such a devoted group of volunteers looking after it. What a treat to stay there for a week.. I might even be tempted to get on a plane for that 😉

  2. The tree beside the lighthouse is pretty and casts a nice shadow. The view from the top is gorgeous and your capture of the stairs is eye candy. Excellent photos, Kay.

  3. I don’t think I have ever been in a lighthouse but somehow the back of my mind has a memory of walking up lots of stairs – now this is going to bother me. I just asked my husband if we have ever climbed one. He says yes at Byron Bay.

  4. It sure is a long way out there! Love your stair pic, Kay!
The candy mural is right in front of a corner store of the old fashioned type so it is a perfect location.
