Fortunes told
“I’ll tell your future if you’d like. I have a deck of tarot cards. Or I can read you palm.”
I’m headed to a new doctor today, off in the big city – Seattle. I hadn’t thought of it before but doctors are a little like fortune tellers. The fortune teller can hint and suggest, leaning on your interpretation of truth, hope and reality. Doctors? They don’t deal in juju. But they can spread out your future in front of you. They can proverbially read your palm and, unlike a fortune teller, possibly make it happen.
Eat your greens
I’m growing kale this year. Because I got my usual late start, I skipped seeds and planted a six pack of little baby kales. I knew it would be more than we are likely to eat but hey, kale’s good for you. You know, it’s one of those superfoods, chock full of the nutrients lacking in all the foods we really love. It also loves it here. It’s growing like it means to turn into a heritage plant. Like a tree.
We’re eating it sautéed, steamed, braised on spaghetti, mounded under fish or chicken. Kale salad, kale chips. Cooked and tossed with balsamic vinegar or salad dressing. Neighbors are beginning to hide when they see me coming. (I think the wheelbarrow of kale leaves must be a tipoff.) Want some?
Cute
I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to call excavating equipment cute. Not when one bigger than a bus cradles a bitsy one. Really. Isn’t it kinda cute?
I wish
I love photos. I love taking them and I love looking at them. But sometimes they fall short. Sometimes there’s a mood, a feeling of place that can only be captured by being there. And you can’t record a scent.
I wish I could have caught the scent as I took this picture. It was heaven. Pure heaven.
Carrie Blake in bloom
The flower gardens at Carrie Blake Park are showing their summer best. This time of year is a real treat and we’ve had a good summer for growing.
Sculptors at work
Sand sculptors are interesting to watch since they work fairly quickly in a medium that works fast and shows fine detail. Sue McGraw, shown here at the Windermere Sand Sculpture Classic contest last Friday, sculpted a piece she entitled “Momma’s Baby.” She placed second with this entry in the “Going to the Zoo” theme. Adding texture to the giraffe necks, her tool of choice here was a table fork.
Third place winner Brent Terry is working here on his entry, “Have an Ice Stay,” complete with a hollowed out igloo that wowed everyone. Cleaning up his work here he used a tool that was slightly more robust than a drinking straw.
I’d only seen sand sculptures on the Internet before I moved to the Olympic Peninsula. The Windermere Sand Sculpture Classic each year allows a real time, closer look at this amazing art form.
