Walk this way

Ten days ago I posted photos of the closed southern portion of the bluff trail at Dungeness Recreation Area and an adjacent new trail under construction further inland. The other day we came upon the ranger-manager as he worked on the new trail which routes walkers inland from the bluff.

The old bluff trail, refurbished only three years ago, is permanently closed due to steady erosion and to prevent ~~idiots~~ misguided walkers from scaling adjacent unprotected bluff areas. Posts and wires are being installed along the new route which should be open (weather permitting work completion) within a couple of weeks. You will, no doubt, see this new trail once my feet get authorization to enter. Can’t wait!

Grey, anyone?

Although we had rain enough, we didn’t get the truly nasty wet and windy hit that much of the West Coast suffered on Thursday. We’ve just had soggy and more soggy, grey clouds pouring down the Olympic Mountains until it’s hard to tell land from sky.

Progress report

It’s time for another look at the new Sequim Civic Center. It’s definitely coming along. Now with paneling applied to the exterior walls, it’s easier to visualize its eventual scale.

You can see here the obvious progress since the last shot that I posted in September from a similar perspective.

Bird condos

There are some birdhouses that rarely fail to catch my eye, especially when I’m on the prowl for color. I’ve tried to shoot them more than once. The yard is surrounded by a cyclone fence that muscles into the shot.

So I’ve cropped these shots. Smaller units are part of the housing development but they face another direction.

Wave action

There I sat on a sunny day, camera in hand, trying to catch and hold a little bit of summer. Just as it is now in my mind, it’s a bit of an abstraction.

Fungi

This time of year most anything colorful in the natural world tends to stand out. A little snow in the background, dead grass, and all of a sudden fungi takes center stage. But the peeling bark and the grey fungus on this tree stump was interesting, too. It doesn’t take much to occupy me sometimes.

Mitten tree

This little spot of cheer was by the side of the trail yesterday. The mitten is no more than a couple of inches high and the tree is 18 inches to two feet.
