A cold, steely grey day frames the Olympic Mountains in late afternoon.

Delapidated
This outbuilding is found behind an older Victorian style home that may well be an early farmhouse. The property is surrounded by homes so any original farmlands have long since been subdivided.
Belted kingfisher
A kingfisher perched on a railing outside the restaurant where I had lunch last week. I no sooner pointed it out to friends then it dropped out of sight. One didn’t see it. Here’s a consolation shot. Not nearly as close but it’s the best I could do.
These birds dive headfirst to catch fish up to two feet beneath water. And that’s not a fleck on the camera: kingfishers have a tiny white patch ahead of its eye.
Bring a parka
There are a handful of picnic sites that overlook Sequim Bay at the John Wayne Marina. The day I was there last week it was mighty quiet. The temperature was barely above freezing all day.
Common sense and public service
How to make sure everyone wears a life preserver when boating? Lend them for free. These are at the John Wayne Marina. I haven’t seen anything like this before.
Cabbage patch
You know you’re in the Pacific Northwest when:
There’s a big crop of cabbage growing in late autumn; and,
It’s backed by evergreen trees.
Water in the bank
The mountains are nicely snow frosted. That snow recharges our aquifers as it melts so it’s always comforting to see plenty of the white stuff.
