Trying to eat like a fisherman

Mussels

A relative came to town in October and we took her to Alder Wood Bistro for dinner. We couldn’t resist mussels, a favorite dish that we enjoyed in some memorable meals in California with our good friend Marie, who’d harvested them. “No one eats like fishermen,” I’ve been told. It’s hard to argue with that.

Oh, the slippery slope!

Chocolate

I find this time of year hard. In the U.S. it’s the Food Season. Our Thanksgiving is Thursday so, of course, everyone’s favorite foods are front and center most anywhere food’s on display. And stay out of any kind of waiting room. Magazines pick up the slack and up the ante with slick shots of foods no self-respecting cook can resist. But Thanksgiving’s just the kick-off for further temptations, binges, snacks, little “extras,” and the only-at-this-time-of-year noshes. If it’s not one thing it’s another. And if you deny yourself one treat there’s a siren call just ahead…compensation for cold-shouldering the eggnog, pumpkin pie, Aunt Mabel’s ambrosia.

An entire wall of chocolate bars? Why not?! Heck, remember? You didn’t buy that 3 lb. box of peppermint chocolate bark yesterday. You’ve got it coming!

Searching for the perfect chile rellano

Rellano

I’ve been searching for a good chile rellano since I left California. I know, I know. The further north you get from the Mexican border the lower the odds of finding one. But I still try. Last week we went to Jose’s Famous Salsa on East Washington. All in all the food was good. Compared to most I’ve had the rellano wasn’t disappointing. In fact, it was pretty good and the salsa’s really good. I think I’ll return and try their tacos and tamales. But I may have to head south for what I’m craving…or break down and get cooking.

Three

Three

Today is a mini celebration with three tiny and delicious cupcakes from That Takes the Cake, Sequim’s cupcake mecca. My first post went live three years ago today. Counting this one, that’s 1,072 posts. It’s been an adventure.

I’ve seen more things through my camera than I ever imagined. I’ve done more things, too, in the service of blogging. Peering more deeply at the mundane, stopping by the sides of roads, thinking in pictures, introducing myself to strangers…and, yes, sitting at the computer, all come to mind.

I’ve “met” a lot of interesting bloggers from around the world and seen inspiring, amazing images.

It’s gratifying that people like you visit this blog and that some even make time to comment. And it’s nice, too, to capture bits of life in photographs. Thanks for joining me on the ride!

Kay n Brownie

And since today is sort of about me here’s a selfie of me dazzling the world with my high end Brownie Hawkeye.

Theme Day: Take Away/Take Out

Take away

Today is Theme Day for City Daily Photo photographers and the theme challenge is “Take Away Store” or, for us in the U.S., “Take Out.”

Modest shops like these are typically unassuming, often family owned, and can be hit or miss. For me, Koto Teriyaki in Sequim is a hit. The owners are very nice and as part of the usual teriyaki and Asian fare they offer a nice yakisoba that’s just right when we need a noodle fix.
