Community education

I was pleased to discover that Peninsula College, our local community college based in Port Angeles, has a presence in this building in downtown Sequim. I’ve taken a few of their noncredit community education classes and as often as not had conflicts that interfered with taking more. But I’m happy when I make it into an interesting class.

Theme Day: Looking Out

“Looking Out” is the challenge for today’s City Daily Photo Theme Day.

This was going to be a photo of my barbecued rib lunch at Jeremiah’s BBQ. But as with many a meal, the food arrived. I was hungry; the camera was forgotten. What does this have to do with “looking out?”

When I raised my attention from the plate, I noticed the floor show outside the door. Here’s what I saw looking out: The Girls, shown here, all have names and according to the wait staff, they respond to them. They have a small repertoire of tricks, including a poultry version of “fetch.” They will chase objects tossed their way. (They’re weak on bringing them back.) And they’ll climb stairs. I didn’t see these skills demonstrated. Mostly they scratched and pecked as I watched.

For me this suffices for entertainment in the country. Who needs bright lights and the big city?

Did someone say "Black Friday?"

Here are a few things I’m not going to do today:
I will not rise before dawn to head out shopping.
I will not venture anywhere near a shopping mall.
Heck, I probably won’t buy anything at all today.

Here are a few things I’m planning today, or very soon:
I’ll probably eat leftover pumpkin pie. And there may be some eggnog that makes its way into a nearby mug. I’ll put up a tree and decorate it. I’ll see if Hubby knows where the lit Labrador went (you can keep the blow-up snowmen and moving lit reindeers and Santas; nothing says Christmas like a lit Labrador).

If you’re local and you want to get into the spirit of things let me remind you that Lazy J Farm, featured above, is open for the holidays and has u-cut trees and wreaths. They also sell tasty organic apples and pears as well as apple cider, Graysmarsh preserves, honey, and that perennial holiday favorite, elephant garlic.

Three Crabs

The 3 Crabs Restaurant, once a pilgrimage on many a tourist’s itinerary, was demolished over the course of a week last month leaving little more than a foundation, a chain link fence, and a porta-potty.

The building above had stood since 1958 and was sold to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife as part of a habitat restoration project. The restaurant was adjacent to tidelands and estuary habitat and the 52-acre property will provide beach access and eventually support efforts to restore salmon habitat.

In the meantime I was amused to see that State Parks hasn’t wasted any time in encouraging the public to bring along a Discover Pass in case anyone wants to spend time touring the exciting fence and foundation.

Yum!

Pane d’Amore Bakery moved into their new downtown store a month or two ago. I’m happy to report that the offerings are as good as ever.

We wandered in on a recent Saturday looking for a carb fix. In addition to a tasty selection of breads, they also offer breakfast pastries, focaccia, and a small selection of gourmet items.

Here’s the store’s new exterior.

Pane d’Amore is located just over the fence…from Over the Fence. And in case this gives you ideas, I’ll warn you now: Sorry! They’re closed on Sundays.

Apron artistry

A recent trip to Port Townsend included a mandatory stop at Elevated Ice Cream for a scoop of their handmade yumness. These “clothes lines” on the wall were a bonus.

This display is a collection shared by a woman from Forks with wonderful examples of “personality by apron.” Patchwork, vintage fabrics, lace, and ruffles. They all were represented.

It’s wonderful to see the variety, creativity, and even beauty in a simple utility garment like an apron. What a fun exhibit!
