I saw this innocent looking piece of driftwood. I liked the light. It wasn’t until I got it home that it took on a new life. Now it looks like a sea creature to me.

Wild rose
The local native Nootka roses (rosa nutkana) are in bloom. Unlike their fancy domestic cousins, they grow like weeds in hedges that can get up to eight feet high and fill broad expanses. Sun or partial shade, wet or dry areas, they aren’t too fussy about where they grow. Landscapes where they grow now are polka dotted with these wonderfully fragrant pink blossoms that bud, bloom, and fade within days.
When the light is just so, like the branches when flush with new growth, the thorns have a reddish hue.
Community Organic Garden of Sequim (COGS)
The Sequim Community Garden is in full swing. It offers annual plots of approximately 100 square feet for gardeners who are committed to growing without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides.
It looks like plots are coming along nicely. Smaller, raised beds like these are offered for those “who cannot handle the traditional, in-ground plot.”

Whatzit
I found this – and a matching one – atop two posts on either side of the entrance to a little country road. I want to call it a “finial” but I don’t think that’s quite it. Finials are architectural decoration on top of structures. Or they’re furniture decoration. So, for now, it’s an official country style whatzit until someone can suggest a better term.
The new City Hall
They had the formal ground breaking for Sequim’s new City Hall last week. You know the event: Five or six people lined up wearing hard hats and wielding shovels, throwing a little dirt around. The real work has already begun; in April I posted the demolition of the old building, here. And before the shovel ceremony there were surveyors and others getting the work underway.
These days the progress is subtle; behind a cyclone fence it’s even more masked. There are forms being built for foundations here. Once the foundation is poured and set things begin to rise above ground. From time to time I’ll drop by the site to show you how things are going.
Time for roses
I’m a sucker for roses and my favorites have these colored edges. That’s called a “picotee.” The only problem with this one was that I couldn’t get close enough to stick my nose in it. I’m also a sucker for the scent of a fragrant rose.
Theme Day: Zest
I freely admit that I’ve taken a different direction in interpreting today’s City Daily Photo theme. “Zest” is often taken to mean hearty enjoyment, relish, or fervor. But, you see, there was a giant lemon sitting at the Inner Harbour in Victoria, B.C. last week. It was conceivably covered with zest, the piquant flavor which shares the same noun. And one cannot turn one’s back on expanding one’s view of things. That, too, can be, well, zestful.
