This tree swallow chick is waiting for one of its parents to bring some yummy take out home.
This mom and pup harbor seal pair were swimming around Protection Island and following our boat. The pup would swim right at the mom’s back and she would stop every 30 seconds or so and lean back to snuggle heads. It was very endearing.
Tufted Puffin. Protection Island used to have the largest breeding colony on the west coast. Unfortunately the predation by bald eagles on the island has driven them off. This year the most I’ve seen is six…This brave guy is looking for a soulmate.
So while I was at my friends house photographing the owl, she shows me a baby hummer on the ground. It was still breathing and she had found its nest 15 ft up on a branch. Her hubby got a ladder and put it back in the nest. I climbed up the hill across from the tree just barely high enough to see into this tiny nest. It’s only 2″ wide and maybe 3″ deep. As I was watching a head started poking up from underneath the bird that fell. It eventually got all the way to the top when I took this shot. I waited for about 30 minutes hoping the mom would return. We kept hearing a hummer chirp in the area. I was a good 50ft in the forest from the tree with the nest. I eventually gave up and went home. My friend said about 5 minutes after I left the mom came and feed them.
Each time our ship would anchor in a new area, our guides would go out in zodiacs to scout the area in search of Polar Bears. If any were seen we could not land.
So my best friend and I were walking (like we do almost every morning) and she said “you are going to be SOOOOO jealous”! I asked why and she told me about this Barred owl that was hanging out at her house the day before. She knows I’m an owl freakazoid–but rarely get to photograph one. I said call me day or night if he returns. About an hour after our walk I got the call. I drove the mile to her house like a maniac . It was still there (and stayed for a good hour!)
So I finally got a shot of a Barred Owl!
