This female walrus (females tusks point together-males point outward so they can poke each other) got quite a bath trying to make her way back to shore.
The Glaciers were enormous and very blue. Note the tiny lil zodiacs on the bottom left.
The ice bergs were breathtaking AND dangerous.
On our first day’s outing a zodiac hit an underwater iceberg. It sliced the side open and two participants immediately flipped over backwards into the 38 degree water. They were promptly rescued by crew in 17 seconds according to the ships video. BRRRRR
Also 2 weeks before another expedition ship hit an iceberg and put a hole in the hull that had to be repaired at sea…Our ship on one occasion veered at 30 degrees to avoid an iceberg leaving everyone on board a little shaky
I have just returned from a 17 day “life bucket” trip to the high arctic. It has been on the books for 4 years. But Covid put a blanket on that for several years.
It was beyond amazing and I’m going to take a week to show some highlights, and then throw some others in on Faraway Fridays.
This shot was taken at the permanent Ice Edge at 82 degrees north in uncharted waters above Nordaustlandet Norway. The bear here was about 2 football fields away peaking over the edge of an ice berg (see below)
He got up and started speed walking toward us, jumping from ice flat to ice flat.
These guys can REALLY MOVE!
This sweet lil bunny is why all the foxes are so healthy on San Juan Island.
There are almost always Kingfishers at the three crabs estuary.
Hubby Ken cooking up some tasty Dungeness Crab from our own backyard.
But you can crab from the shore or from the public docks too. All you need is a license and crab pot (and a license). Come try it it’s fun AND delicious!
