Theme Day: Movement

Motion

The challenge for City Daily Photo’s participants today is “movement,” which immediately led me to a shot from a local bicycle race, the “Tour de Dung,” last spring. Click here to see other interpretations of today’s theme.

Wondering about the name “Tour de Dung?” It’s not about manure. The race takes place in the Dungeness region of Sequim, a beautiful spot for bicycling at any speed.

Tour de Dung 2014

Yesterday was the annual Tour de Dung bicycle races. That’s “Dung” as in “Dungeness,” the region in Sequim where the races are held. This race is held annually to prove how ridiculously slow I am at photographing speeding bicycles. (Sorry to the many bicyclists who have shown up on my editing screen cut in half. I’m glad you haven’t seen yourselves.) Yeah, and there’s something about bikes and races and stuff.

This is the first of two weekend races. There will be more next Saturday as well.

Local drivers, please have a care – and patience, if necessary. The race is well organized and cars accompany racers. But there are a lot of bicyclists on the road, singles and in groups. Bicyclists appreciate your sharing the road. And, for my part, I didn’t like avoiding a head-on collision with a truck that was hell bent on passing a bicyclist on the shoulder.

Tour de Dung, 2 of 2

I lived for a long time in an area well populated with mountain bikes and I see bikes on the trail in the Dungeness Recreation Area. The ones in this race are a whole different ballgame. And is it totally girlie of me to say I liked the colorful shoes? You can see some of them in the photo below.

The course takes about half an hour and the speeds are about 24 mph. Though the groups of bicyclists are large, they pass by in a flash.

Tour de Dung, 1 of 2

The Tour de Dung (as in “Dungeness”) bicycle races were held in Sequim yesterday. The course is just short of 12 miles on a beautiful route described as “safe, dry, fast, and flat.” I enjoyed taking a front row seat.

The weather was good — that is, no rain or wind.

Races will be held again next Saturday. Locals, watch out for the racers. They are proceeded and followed by cars with signs and flashing lights.
