Views of Sequim, the Olympic Peninsula. . .and beyond
Here are some of the creations showcased by That Takes the Cake, one of Sequim’s newest bakeries. Their Facebook page shows other creations. They also make specialty or theme cakes, so you don’t have to get married to justify ordering a memorable cake if your budget allows more of a wow factor than the standard sheetcake we all know so well.
There’s another new bakery in town that I’ll check out oneday soon. Stay tuned!
A newspaper article announced the opening of “That Takes the Cake.” It sounded like a bakery I could resist and I thought I’d dodged the bullet: they specialize in wedding cakes. But I knew I was a goner when I read on. They also sell cupcakes. Oh, no! Cupcakes! The carb-lover’s excuse to go shopping. . .and the Sequim Daily Photo’s opportunity to show you a new business in town.
Here’s the impulse showcase for walk-ins: cupcake heaven. Flavors change daily and the menu is posted on their Facebook page. The shot at the top of this post is the frosting on the cupcake that went home with me. It was real (and delicious) buttercream on a red velvet cupcake. It wasn’t an easy decision. While I weighed my choices I also took photos of some of the sample wedding cakes stationed around the two rooms where guests can sample goodies or bring friends for a party.
The wedding cakes were beautiful. I’ll post some pictures of them tomorrow.
I lived for a long time in an area well populated with mountain bikes and I see bikes on the trail in the Dungeness Recreation Area. The ones in this race are a whole different ballgame. And is it totally girlie of me to say I liked the colorful shoes? You can see some of them in the photo below.
The course takes about half an hour and the speeds are about 24 mph. Though the groups of bicyclists are large, they pass by in a flash.
The last time I heard, our local Walmart was scheduled to have its grand opening as a “superstore” some time this month. And the last time I was there, much of the new west (left) side of the building was open and full of products. The construction barriers are down and it looks as if it is just getting some final touches before it’s declared “done.” In the meantime, here it is!
Every now and then I crave a good, char-broiled hamburger. I haven’t scoured Sequim for the perfect burger, but have been happy with the ones I’ve found at Stymie’s, the bar and grill at the Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course. I tried something new yesterday: this one came topped with blue cheese. And instead of the standard virtuous salad I opted for the sweet potato fries. I left happy.

I saw this distinctive weathervane atop Mike’s Bikes in Sequim.
The Elks Lodge on Port Williams Road offers facilities for local events in addition to regular Elks functions. For instance, the Olympic Peninsula Mycological Society holds its very popular annual Wild Mushroom Show here. The Elks offer regular meals for the community and also share their RV facilities for a fee.
Tonight is Pub Night featuring steaks, shrimp, burgers and fries, fish and chips, salads, and reduced price beer and wine.
