Cemetery cat

This cat has taken on the responsibility of greeting people and making them feel welcome at the Dungeness Cemetery. Or, at least it did in my case recently. Here it walked across the top of a grave monument, then followed me like a friendly dog. It meowed like it was telling me stories of the souls attached to the graves. Then it approached again. “You’re welcome to pet me if you’re feeling a little down.”

It’s called anthropomorphizing when you project human attributes onto an animal’s behavior. But I rather like thinking that is what this kitty is all about.

Watch your dog

Continuing yesterday’s animal theme, here are a pair of pooches at the Sequim dog park. I could almost hear one of them saying, “Left, left, slide. . .good! Now you’ve got it!”

Watch your dog. It can be loads of fun.

Theme Day: Animals

This month’s City Daily Photo Theme Day is “Animals.” These big boys were chowing down not far from Home Depot.

This fellow was in the next field. Consider this an example of “Things I Never Thought About Animals Doing.” That is, how does a bull lie down? Judging by the expression on his face, in this case it didn’t feel graceful.

But all’s well that ends well. In all the photos after this one our boy’s eyes were closed and he looked quite serene.

Presents for pets

The first year our beloved dog Nyla was part of the family she had no gifts. Family gathered around, tearing into gift wrap, oohing and aahing over presents. As the wrap and ribbon settled and the excitement quieted, we turned to see Nyla lying with her head nestled between her front paws. The only word for the sad eyed expression on her face was “forlorn.”

This is Chord above. He is a cheerful soul, though here he’s saying, “Come on, not this hat again!” You should see the expression on his face when we unwrap a toy for him at Christmas.

Do you have companion animals in your life? If so, do they get presents when your human family exchanges gifts?

City Daily Photo’s Theme Day today is “Action shot.” This barrel racing photo was taken at the Rodeo at Clallam County Fair in August. I loved this competition and the beautiful teamwork of horse and rider. If you’d like to see other action shots from this event, click here. Other events included bareback riding and bull riding.

Disappearing deer

Dungeness Recreation Area is open to pheasant hunting on weekends and holidays from October through January. Before the shooting begins the deer disappear like clockwork, although it is illegal to hunt them there. The area is stocked with pheasant that are raised to be hunted.

I’ve been told by more than one person that the Dungeness Recreation Area originally was a hunting reserve and the hunters deeded it to Clallam County on the condition that they be allowed to continue to hunt. As more housing has surrounded the area they have asked the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife to help them find a more remote area in which to hunt.

The area across the street from the Recreation Area, Blue Ribbon Farms, was once owned by Pabst Blue Ribbon as a hunting reserve. Many local hunters remembering hunting ducks as children where housing now stands.

Hunting is part of the local culture here. If you eat meat is one better than the other: raising, hunting and killing what you eat or having someone raise and slaughter it for you? I’m not sure there’s an easy answer, at least from where I sit.

Cool bear

These wrestling bears are near the entry gate to a Sequim home. I hadn’t noticed that one of them is sporting an uber cool look until I got up close enough to take this shot.
