Sequim Daily Photo

An introduction to Sequim, WA and the beautiful Olympic Peninsula

Many people around here may be blase about our resident Roosevelt elk. But until last Saturday I had seen nary a one. As I drove on Highway 101 I saw an elk crossing sign flashing. For once there was a small herd grazing in view from the road.

You can see that some of them are wearing yellow and blue collars which trigger the crossing signs. It looks like this is a herd of females (cows) and youngsters. I didn’t see evidence of the magnificent antlers that the bulls sport.

And this, apparently, is what they think of my picture-taking efforts.

Gimmee!

Chord’s favorite pal Jenny Bell came for a visit last weekend. They have the labrador retriever thing for tennis balls. There’s no game like a dog game.

“Jenny’s got the ball. She’s got a clear field to the left. She’s going to go long. . .no, wait. . .! It looks like there’s trouble on the field!”

“Jenny’s lost it! Chord’s down but he’s got the ball! What’s that he’s saying? Bob, can you pick it up from where you’re sitting?

Ed, I think he’s saying ‘Neener, neener, neener!’”

What game?

If you walk regularly at the Dungeness Recreation Area, as I do, people and dogs become familiar. I don’t see this pair regularly, but I was tickled to recognize them quickly enough to take another shot of them on this trail, a different spot from my post on March 14. As you can see, spring hasn’t exactly popped here yet, but the tiniest of leaves are finally unfurling. We’ve had consistent overnight freezes until just a few days ago.

Four young deer stopped by our backyard to help trim the grass the other day. This is the innocent look that two of them gave me when I suggested they not go after our tiny, defenseless snowberry bushes for dessert.

Chord, the Wonder Dog. Avid walker. Fine companion. Most people think their animals are the best in the world. I’m no different.

Chord tip toed through the tulips at the Skagitt Valley Tulip Festival last year. I’d known of this event for many years but last spring was my first opportunity to visit. I’ll share a few more pictures in the next day or two.

Cemetery cat

This cat has taken on the responsibility of greeting people and making them feel welcome at the Dungeness Cemetery. Or, at least it did in my case recently. Here it walked across the top of a grave monument, then followed me like a friendly dog. It meowed like it was telling me stories of the souls attached to the graves. Then it approached again. “You’re welcome to pet me if you’re feeling a little down.”

It’s called anthropomorphizing when you project human attributes onto an animal’s behavior. But I rather like thinking that is what this kitty is all about.
