Winter color

It’s tough to fall in love with an orchid, bring it home, and then discover that the spot that seemed perfect simply isn’t. I’m pleased to find that I have an inside spot where orchids seem to be happy, which means for me that an orchid keeps living and blooms again. I think this one is an odontoglossum, but it’s hard to be sure because there are so many hybrids.

In addition to finding the flowers fascinating, the leaves on this plant pop out with a fascinating ruffle. I’m not sure if this is a typical growth habit, but they seem to straighten out and grow normally so I consider it another pleasure of keeping the plant alive. It’s nice to have a plant that is blooming in winter.

It’s a beauty and will keep you very happy. I’ve never had much luck with them; perhaps I need to find a different location in my house for the plants?

This last week inside colour is the only colour to be found – I’m getting seriously miffed with these grey skies!

Kate, a good window with some nice morning light, or a good dose of steady, indirect light will make most plants happy. Orchids do seem to need a fair amount of light but not so much that they get fried.

Paul, I’m so color starved that I look at the reddish wood of willows and roses and declare them colorful. Christmas lights helped, and now they’re gone. And I’ve heard these skies described as “pearly,” though a better term doesn’t improve them much, does it?

i love plants/flowers in my house… back in the netherlands, especially in Utrecht where i lived, you can buy cut flowers for almost nothing (especially compared to here), 40 or even 60 roses for 5 euros (some 7 dollars or so). i bought a bunch almost every week… sometimes i shared them with my colleague/friend. it was really such pleasure to go out shopping and then buy flowers at the end of the day…
woops, now im homesick a little!
