Other colors at Purple Haze

Purple Haze is one of the earliest lavender farms in the region. In addition to gorgeous lavender fields the farm also has a guest house with a beautiful garden nearby. During the Lavender Faire in July lettuces in the raised boxes were just beginning to come into their own while the poppies and other blossoms were already gorgeous. Corn is growing in the background.

Those lettuce boxes are intriguing. I’d love to get a closer look at them to see how they keep the wood in good shape, and how they drain; a good project for the next time I’m in Sequim. (With luck, this winter should do it.)

Kibz, these boxes look like ones that are sold ready-made at the local Sequim CoOp. They’re made from cedar, which is a more rot resistant wood. There were drain holes drilled in the bottom of the one I saw and it came with a permeable fabric that would be laid over the holes before putting in soil. As you can see, they’re nicely done.

Cedar is a great idea. It grows down here, so we use it quite a bit for outdoor projects. I have a bad back, and have been debating about a raised bed garden, but this lettuce box looks pefect for salad greens!

I love the lettuce boxes, great height to work with for us older folks. I have had raised beds before but unlike these and it is amazing how much can be grown in one. The space for walking paths in a regular garden hold extra veggies, No hoeing of weeds either, so easy to walk around and pull anything while small. Such beautiful flowers too.
