December 28, 2007 - They’re Back!/Repost 06

Last Spring a horde of bunnies showed up in my backyard, munching on all the new growth. I borrowed a “Have a Heart” trap. I caught the first one on carrots and apples. After that they thumbed their nose at me. I even borrowed a salmon net and played “Elmer Fudd” to no avail. One day I dumped a bag of slightly over done popcorn on the grass for the birds. I looked out later and there was a bunny among the birds, having lunch. Bingo! I caught 4 more with popped popcorn. Before the animal welfare folks decend on my website, let me share that all of these bunnies were transported to “Bunny Haven”. They are well fed and happily doing what bunnies do. However, I didn’t get them all. There are two more having fun in my backyard. Trap and popcorn are now back in use. One bunny down…two to go.

I just re read last year’s post…If it had only been just two more. I think we are at Canada de Enmedio today…hot springs.

Who would’ve guessed that they would have liked popcorn better than veggies? I’m glad you chose to relocate the little guys instead of some other alternatives.

Do you know that in France, we eat rabbits? (and frogs of course, ah ah!)

The ear on this one looks like he had an encounter with someone bigger than he! Alice, as a child, I often ate both frog legs and rabbit–French heritage. Now, I’m not too sure that rabbit would taste the same!! (Still love frog legs—but I have a poem that gives me pause about that!)

Oh, won’t you have fun around Easter time?! Unless the bunnies didn’t do what bunnies are known for doing - making more bunnies.

Aren’t they incredibly cute — until they cause the damage they cause? :-) I have the same issue with gophers and prairie dogs. Like you, I do everything humane. Subsequently, we live an uneasy peace with one another and I’m waiting for my house to fall into the tunnel system they’ve built.

Enough about me…heh. I like this. You got some nice detail — especially with the ear.

Those are freaking HUGE! I had no idea you could find real rabbits that size in the wild. Omigosh! I’d be afraid they’d turn on me and stalk me in my bed! :) So glad your kind heart won out and you transported them to a safe place.

What a crazy story! Had no idea they liked popcorn! I thought it would end with an explanation on that ear…but you’re clearly too kind to have caused that defect. Thanks for your comments while I was away. Quilt away!

Being a city dweller all my life, I never had a rabbit for a pet or played with one. But I think they are beautiful and cuddly. Do they make good pets?

What a handsome rabbit - despite his chewed ear! Wishing you a very happy New Year, Norma, and thanks so much for your visits to my blogs.

Nice rabbit, but slightly different in color. I wonder why that should be?

He’s adorable and I enjoyed reading your post. Those critters CAN be rather pesky. Good luck with the “hunting.”

That bunny looks more domestic than wild. maybe someone let him go and he got into a scrape, hence the ear…cute from a distance but a pain in your yard.
Great post.
