Tiny addition to the literary scene

Tiny library

There’s a new branch of the North Olympic Library System (“NOLS”) on West Washington Street. There’s not much to it but it’s a fine addition to Sequim. If you can’t read the sign on the side of the, uhm, “building,” NOLS says about its books to enjoy them, share them, return them, or keep them forever.

Imagine that! No fines for late books! This tiny branch is next door to Doodlebugs.

  1. These are all over Bellingham – people put them up in their yards and neighbors share books. You can make your own, or the restore will sell you one already made and you can paint it before you put it in your yard, usually near the sidewalk. One lady even knit a cover for her little library.

  2. These little libraries are becoming an international “event;” do you know its history? It was started a number of years ago by a man in Hudson, Wisconsin as a tribute to his mother, caught on widely, and is now a thriving business. I just culled my cookbook collection and intend to take about a dozen and distribute them around the neighborhood while I take autumn photos.

  3. Pretty cool. Most little free libraries are started by individuals who are readers, but this looks like the municipal library has started its own. Congratulations to them.
