Skunk cabbage

Skunk cabbage (symplocarpus foetidus) is a humble plant and I understand it can be rather smelly. But I discovered a patch of skunk cabbage about a week ago and found it pretty. It likes to grow in boggy areas and I came close to filling my shoes with mud, so I didn’t get terribly close.

Here’s an essay about skunk cabbage if you’d like to explore the subject further.

  1. Thanks for the link. For a “humble” plant, it can be very interesting! The color of this one is bright and cheerful. I guess it really isn’t necessary to smell good to be attractive!

  2. that is pretty! i think i never saw one before..
on real skunks; we every now and then smelled their awful smell in summer, but we always thought it was insect repellent!! until one night there was one real closeby and i realized it must be a skunk… hahahaha. somehow it was better when we still thought it was repellent. what an awful smell that was..
