Seagull fly-bys

Here are more seagulls on the wing. They’re doing fly-bys as a man on the bluff throws bread, which they catch midair. I like the play of light and shadow.

People here regularly throw bread to the seagulls. Gulls are world class scavengers and I doubt that they would go hungry without handouts. But I’m not sure human bread constitutes a healthy diet.

  1. Paul and Kay, what do you suggest feeding them intead?
Kay, do you think they get that bread at Walmart?

  2. Shannon, the prevailing notion is to not feed wild animals, period. They shouldn’t become dependent on handouts in order to eat and should, instead, remain able to forage and eat a more natural diet, pretty much anything they can catch. Seafood comes to mind. Animals that lose their hunting skills can starve if their human feeders stop showing up and, like humans, can sicken on a bad diet…Walmart, Bell St. Bakery, Pan d’Amore. Sorry! None of it’s any good.

  3. It may not be appealing for humans to do, but if you really want to feed gulls and give them decent food, fish bait comes to mind. My husband also suggests going to a meat market and asking for fish that’s past it’s “sell by” date. Cut up scraps of that. Ever notice how gulls swarm around incoming fishing boats? When our land was flooded this year we had gulls galore who were eating up every earthworm they could find.

  4. cool pictures!
we have a sign in a very popular park in my old city in the netherlands (Utrecht), where they ask you not to feed the ducks. because of you do, the males especially become bored (no need to search for their own food anymore), and as they are bored, they want other entertainment and then they want “attention” from the females and then they start to harras them… and thats why you shouldnt feed them… 🙂 (but maybe i told this once already here..)

ah, we did try the eggnog/coffee. i liked it (although i still prefer my coffee black), but the bf was not too impressed…

  5. These are wonderful images – the motion, the detail, the colors (like when the light is shining through a webbed foot) – gorgeous!
