That time of year

This is the time of year when many of us roll out things that give us warm fuzzy feelings. Or a seasonal goodie. And, of course, as Tevya sings in “Fiddler on the Roof,” there’s Tradition.

I realized as I bought a supply of candy canes recently that these are one of the treats that brighten this time of year for me. It’s a cheap thrill, probably started as I snatched them off a Christmas tree.

Eggnog lattes are another seasonal treat. And I like to acknowledge Solstice, the first day of winter, because it marks the day when the sun will soon begin its return to longer days.

What about you? Is there something you really love at this time of year? Do you celebrate Christmas? Hanukkah? Some other holiday?

  1. The simple act of stringing lights on the tree, be they outside or inside! Our local Garden Expert Andrew May wrote a great column a couple weeks back on stringing lights up everywhere the more the better! I hate having to take them down when the festivities are over. Eggnog is also a once a year treat! (we’d never fit through the doorways if we drank it year-round.) The full flavored full-fat ones are the BEST!!

  2. i like those candy canes too. but mostly for their looks. i bought them last year, and found them back in the “christmas-decoration-box”. im sure they will go in there again for next year…
what is an eggnog latte? is that eggnog in your coffee? as non-americans we encountered eggnog for the first time last year, and now drink it sometimes pure, or mixed with some rum. (ah, and i made a cake with it). im wondering how it will taste when heated, or is that not advisable? (we only bought premade from the supermarket, i looked up the recipe but thats too much work… 😉 )

  3. Cat, eggnog latte is coffee with hot eggnog in it, and I think the eggnog is steamed or frothed as it’s added to the coffee. I’ve never made it myself; it’s offered at a lot of coffee shops this time of the year. Eggnog is often heated, nothing wrong with doing that, and served with brandy and probably a number of other kinds of alcohol.

  4. cool! my boyfriend just bought a fancy coffeemachine with such a steamer to heat milk. tonight i will let him heat some eggnog then… 🙂
